Every weekday morning I take the 8:30 bus to go to my job. I know by sight several people who also fide that bus. Some of the girls work as maids. They get off at each stop in ones, twos or threes.
But at one corner something wonderful happens. Before the bus stops, a little dog races out of the nearest house. He doesn’t look at two of the maids who get off. But for the third he has a joyful “Hello!” From head to tail his little body wags his happiness. Everyone on the bus watches until the maid and the dog go into the house.
One day not long ago, the maid wasn’t on the bus. I wondered if the dog would be waiting for her. Sure enough, he was!
He stood at the back door of the bus for a minute. I could see his joyful welcome turning into fearful worry. Where was she?
The driver closed the back door. The dog raced to the front door. It, too, shut in his face.
Everyone on the bus felt sad. Poor little pup! He looked so unhappy, standing there!
The driver couldn't stand it. He opened the door and looked down at the dog. “She didn't come today,” he said, in a loud, kind voice.
A man in a front seat leaned forward. “Maybe she will come tomorrow,” he called.
The dog wagged his tail as if to say “thank you.” He watched the bus as we pulled away. Then he turned to trot(小跑)home alone.
The next day everyone on the bus was happy to see the maid back again. Yes, the dog was waiting for her.
The welcome he gave her was even warmer and more delighted than usual. We all smiled at one another. How bright and good the morning suddenly seemed to us!
56. What do the people on the bus usually see at one corner?
A. A little dog coming close to the bus when it stops.
B. Two maids get off the moment the bus stops.
C. A dog waiting for someone.
D. A dog greets a maid merrily and follows her into a house.
57. One day the maid wasn’t on the bus and the dog ___.
A. didn’t appear B. stood waiting at the bus stop till the bus left
C. raced about looking for the maid D. went back the moment he found the maid wasn’t there
58. The next day people on the bus were happy, for ___.
A. the maid was among them again B. she would not take the same bus
C. she was not on their bus D. she was waiting for an empty bus to come
59. We can safely say this story is about ___.

Television has opened windows in everybody’s life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the sc-Teen.
Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.
Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the “television generations” are more violent than their parents and grandparents.
Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn’t do funny things like the people on children’s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen.
60. In the past, many young people__________.
A. knew the effects of war B. went in for politics
C. liked to save the wounded in wars D. were willing to be soldiers
61. The author thinks that TV advertisements__________.
A. are not reliable on the whole B. are useless to people
C. are a good guide to adults D. are very harmful to the young
62. Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People have become used to crimes now.
B. With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly.
C. People now like to read books with pictures.
D. The adults are less violent than the young.
63. From the passage, we can conclude that__________.
A. children should keep away from TV B. TV programs should be improved
C. children's books should have pictures D. TV has a deep influence on the young

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.
●The ant -- works first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks (基金和股票)with low risk.
●The cricket -- fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance(保险).
●The snail -- lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.
64. One’s values may _______.
A. be his ways of managing money
B. be his beliefs about society
C. determine his family and education
D. influence his behavior
65. Mr. Smith always enjoys spending a weekend with his friends, fishing, bunting and playing cards. Moreover, he spends money in a very luxurious way. So, ___________.
A. Mr. Smith belongs to the ant type
B. Mr. Smith belongs to the cricket type
C. Mr. Smith belongs to the snail type
D. it’s hard to tell which kind of person Mr. Smith is
66. According to the passage, the most suitable title would be _______.
A. Spending Nature B. What Comes First
C. How to Understand Your Values D. Work and Fun
D
Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation.
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even tough it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being entirely by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed entirely, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed(畸形) way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to have serious illness as result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
67. What can we infer from the passage?
A. We can’t detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.
B. Only radiation at very high levels can kill an an, imal or human being.
C. If a few cells are only damaged healthy cells will take the place of dead ones.
D. Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.
68. The word “significant” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with________.
A. deadly B. meaningful C. harmful D. obvious
69. Radiation can hurt us in that it can_______.
A. affect the healthy growth of our offspring.
B. damage cells which grow into cancer years later.
C. kill large number of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately.
D. all of the above
70. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. Emphasizing the importance of protection of radiation.
B. Solving the mystery about radiation.
C. Discussing the cause of cancer.
D. Introducing the nuclear power.

Many students eat their breakfasts on the way to school or in the dinning-room. But some of them don’t really know how to eat well when eating out.
Here is some important advice. The first is to eat less fast food. The most obvious harm of eating too much fast food is weight gaining because of too much fat. Young people and adults are at risk of disease related to weight.
Too much fast food can drag your body down. French fries, for example, were recently found to contain much more acrylamide(丙烯酰胺) than other food. This may cause cancer. Actually, deep fried food all contains acrylamide. So don’t eat it too often.
Soda is another thing you should watch out for. Cokes and other sodas contain a lot of sugar and can slow down a person’s calcium absorption, so it’s best to drink as little soda as possible.
Food in the dinning-room may not be as tasty as fast food, but it’s actually easier to make healthy choices. Human bodies need variety. You can have a dinner that balances lean proteins, vitamins and complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物). In other words, a meal with fish or meat, vegetables and some bread or rice will provide you with most nutrients that the body needs.
Some snacks, on the other hand, will help keep you going until your next big meal. It is natural for teenagers, especially boys, to feel hungry during school time. Don’t forget to take some foods, like whole-grain biscuits or low-fat milk in your school bag.

范文:
My views on the development of private car ownership
With the improved social developments, more and more Chinese families are beginning to afford private cars. Yet opinions of whether we should develop private car ownership or not differ from person to person.
In some people’s eyes, private cars have offered them great convenience and mobility. People no longer have to depend on public transportation and they can go wherever they want. However, opponents of this idea think that private cars make the situation of city traffic even worse. People are often held up by traffic jams and traffic accidents occur everywhere, making family members of victims suffer from incurable pains. Worse still, so many private cars greatly pollute the air.
As far as I’m concerned, the increasing number of private cars is a symbol of modernization of our country, but we should try to carry out some related policies to put the use of private cars under firm control.
